Education Conference 2010 – Topic: “Learning Communities”

Some research is being planned for later in the year centred around this topic – likely to involve focus groups.  We will appreciate assistance/time of members when we are seeking research participants.

Note: consideration is currently being given to topics that have been suggested for future Education Conferences – these include ICT, SESE, Literacy, and Codes of Behaviour.

Teaching Council – Codes of Professional Conduct for Teachers

Áine Lawlor addressed the January 5th EDC meeting on professional aspects of the Teaching Council’s remit such as the professional codes of conduct.  Copies of the professional codes were circulated to all schools – also available on the Teaching Council’s website.

“National Assessment”

The National Assessment of English Reading and the National Assessment of Mathematics Achievement (which normally take place every 5 years) have been modified somewhat and are now called “National Assessment”.  In previous years, this random-selection assessment was aimed at fourth class (Maths) and fifth class (English).  Last May, it was carried out with second and sixth classes, and the same children underwent both the English and Maths assessment.  This should allow for more detailed analysis of Maths/English findings.  It is planned that Irish-medium schools will be involved in these tests in May 2010, separately.  (Note: there was some participation by Irish-medium schools in May 2009, via the random selection process.)

For further information, check out www.erc.ie

Standardised Irish Tests

It is expected that standardised Irish tests will be available this year for Irish-medium schools – this will happen at a later stage for other schools, since norms need to be worked out etc.

Whole School Evaluation Report

A report of the research carried out by the INTO Education Committee from 2006 – 2009 on Whole School Evaluation is now available for download here
